On Thursday, January 19, 2012, the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center will host a presentation by Roxanne Stewart and her students from Ke Ana Laʻahana charter school on management practices utilized at Hale O Lono, a traditional fishpond in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. The presentation will showcase a Hawaiian Lunar Calendar created by high school kiaʻi (caretakers) that is used as part of the management practices of the loko iʻa. These kiaʻi are trained as part of their science curriculum to utilize the "science" of their Hawaiian ancestors in the caretaking and monitoring of Hale O Lono. Students monitored the growth cycles of flora and fauna in addition to monitoring water quality at the fishpond, and will share the findings of their research.
