Creatures of the Abyss

Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument staff joined with research partner, Hawai'i Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) to inform people about deep sea discoveries in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands at Members Preview Night at Bishop Museum's "Creatures of the Abyss" exhibit. HURL was the first research partner when the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve was established in 2000. The reserve paved the way for the designation of Papahānaumokuākea in 2006.

 

Wesley Byers, Constituent Outreach Specialist for Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument explains the last decade of protection history to visitors at Bishop Museum's "Creatures of the Abyss" exhibit. Papahānaumokuākea partnered with the Hawai'i Undersea Research Laboratory; the first research partner for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve after establishment in 2000. A painting of a deep submersible dive in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands by chief pilot Terry Kerby is to Byers' right.

The Monument joined with research partner, Hawai'i Undersea Research Laboratory to talk about the 10th Anniversary of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve.
