The first USS Saginaw was a side wheel steam gunboat in the U.S. Navy before, during and after the American Civil War. Her service dates from 1859 until 1870, when she grounded on a reef at Kure Atoll in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. Maritime archeologist Dr. Hans Van Tilburg relates stories of the Saginaw during the opening of the Lost on a Reef maritime heritage exhibit at the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center in Hilo, HI.
